For Ensemble Theatre of Chattanooga's production of Southbridge, I brainstormed major themes to identify keyword prompts. The concept of a tree's root structure twisting into the braids of a rope became the primary symbolism depicting the lead character's struggle to navigate a complex social landscape of new opportunity and enduring racial stigma in the shadow of the Civil War.
